Day 24 of 365

Gen 45:1–46:34, Matt 16:1–16, Ps 12:1–8

Old Testament

Gen 45:1–46:34

45:1 Then Joseph couldn't control himself before all those who stood before him, and he cried, "Cause every man to go out from me!" No one else stood with him, while Joseph made himself known to his brothers.

45:2 He wept aloud. The Egyptians heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard.

45:3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Does my father still live?" His brothers couldn't answer him; for they were terrified at his presence.

45:4 Joseph said to his brothers, "Come near to me, please." They came near. "He said, I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.

45:5 Now do not be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.

45:6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest.

45:7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.

45:8 So now it wasn't you who sent me here, but God, and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

45:9 Hurry, and go up to my father, and tell him, 'This is what your son Joseph says, "God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me. Do not wait.

45:10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you will be near to me, you, your children, your children's children, your flocks, your herds, and all that you have.

45:11 There I will nourish you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have."'

45:12 Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you.

45:13 You shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. You shall hurry and bring my father down here."

45:14 He fell on his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.

45:15 He kissed all his brothers, and wept on them. After that his brothers talked with him.

45:16 The report of it was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, "Joseph's brothers have come." It pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.

45:17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Tell your brothers, 'Do this. Load your animals, and go, travel to the land of Canaan.

45:18 Take your father and your households, and come to me, and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.'

45:19 Now you are commanded: do this. Take wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.

45:20 Also, do not concern yourselves about your belongings, for the good of all of the land of Egypt is yours."

45:21 The sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

45:22 He gave each one of them changes of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing.

45:23 To his father, he sent after this manner: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and provision for his father by the way.

45:24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed. He said to them, "See that you do not quarrel on the way."

45:25 They went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.

45:26 They told him, saying, "Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt." His heart fainted, for he did not believe them.

45:27 They told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them. When he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob, their father, revived.

45:28 Israel said, "It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die."

46:1 Israel traveled with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.

46:2 God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob!" He said, "Here I am."

46:3 He said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation.

46:4 I will go down with you into Egypt. I will also surely bring you up again. Joseph will close your eyes."

46:5 Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried Jacob, their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

46:6 They took their livestock, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt-Jacob, and all his seed with him,

46:7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and he brought all his seed with him into Egypt.

46:8 These are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.

46:9 The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

46:10 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

46:11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

46:12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.

46:13 The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron.

46:14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.

46:15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty-three.

46:16 The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.

46:17 The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and Serah their sister. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.

46:18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah, his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob, even sixteen souls.

46:19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin.

46:20 To Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. And there were sons born to Manasseh, which the Aramean concubine bore to him: Machir. And Machir begot Gilead. And the sons of Ephraim, the brother of Manasseh: Shuthelah and Tahan. And the sons of Shuthelah: Eran

46:21 And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel. And the sons of Bela were: Gera and Naaman, and Ehi, and Rosh, and Muppim, and Huppim. And Gera begot Ard.

46:22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: all the souls were eighteen.

46:23 The son of Dan: Hushim.

46:24 The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.

46:25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel, his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob: all the souls were seven.

46:26 All the souls who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct descendants, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were sixty-six.

46:27 The sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were nine souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, who came into Egypt, were seventy-five.

46:28 He sent Judah before him to Joseph, to show the way before him to Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen.

46:29 Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel, his father, in Goshen. He presented himself to him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

46:30 Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive."

46:31 Joseph said to his brothers, and to his father's house, "I will go up, and speak with Pharaoh, and will tell him, 'My brothers, and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.

46:32 These men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.'

46:33 It will happen, when Pharaoh summons you, and will say, 'What is your occupation?'

46:34 that you shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers:' that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians."

New Testament

Matt 16:1–16

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 But he answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'

3 In the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times!

4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of Jonah." He left them, and departed.

5 The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread.

6 Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

7 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."

8 Jesus, perceiving it, said, "Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you have no bread?

9 Do you not yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

10 Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

11 How is it that you do not perceive that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that the Son of Man is?"

14 They said, "Some say John the Baptist, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."

15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Psalm

Ps 12:1–8

1 Help, Lord; for the godly man ceases. For the faithful fail from among the children of men.

2 Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart.

3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,

4 who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?"

5 "Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the Lord; "I will set him in safety from those who malign him."

6 The words of the Lord are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times.

7 You will keep them, Lord. You will preserve them from this generation forever.

8 The wicked walk on every side, when what is vile is exalted among the sons of men.
