Day 29 of 365
Exod 5:1–6:30, Matt 19:1–30, Ps 14:1–7
Old Testament
5:1 Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says, 'Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'"
5:2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the Lord, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover I will not let Israel go."
5:3 They said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the Lord, our God, lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword."
5:4 The king of Egypt said to them, "Why do you, Moses and Aaron, separate the people from their work? Get back to your burdens!"
5:5 Pharaoh said, "Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens."
5:6 The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
5:7 "You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.
5:8 The number of the bricks, which they made before, you require from them. You shall not diminish anything of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'
5:9 Let heavier work be laid on the men, that they may regard it; and do not let them regard lying words."
5:10 The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, This is what Pharaoh says: "I will not give you straw.
5:11 Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished."
5:12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
5:13 The taskmasters were urgent saying, "Fulfill your work quota daily, as when there was straw given to you!"
5:14 The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, "Why haven't you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?"
5:15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you deal this way with your servants?
5:16 No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, 'Make brick!' and behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people."
5:17 But he said, "You are idle! You are idle! Therefore you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.'
5:18 Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks!"
5:19 The officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, "You shall not diminish anything from your daily quota of bricks!"
5:20 They met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:
5:21 and they said to them, "May the Lord look at you, and judge, because you have made us a stench to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us."
5:22 Moses returned to the Lord, and said, "Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Why is it that you have sent me?
5:23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people; neither have you delivered your people at all."
6:1 The Lord said to Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land."
6:2 God spoke to Moses, and said to him, "I am the Lord;
6:3 and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name the Lord I was not known to them.
6:4 I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their travels, in which they lived as foreigners.
6:5 Moreover I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered my covenant.
6:6 Therefore tell the children of Israel, 'I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments:
6:7 and I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
6:8 I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it to you for a heritage: I am the Lord.'"
6:9 Moses spoke so to the children of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.
6:10 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
6:11 "Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land."
6:12 Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, "Behold, the children of Israel haven't listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, who am of uncircumcised lips?"
6:13 The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a command to the children of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
6:14 These are the heads of their fathers' houses. The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.
6:15 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon.
6:16 These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari; and the years of the life of Levi were one hundred thirty-seven years.
6:17 The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, according to their families.
6:18 The sons of Kohath: Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel; and the years of the life of Kohath were one hundred thirty-three years.
6:19 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations.
6:20 Amram took Jochebed his father's sister to himself as wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were a hundred and thirty-seven years.
6:21 The sons of Izhar: Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.
6:22 The sons of Uzziel: Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Sithri.
6:23 Aaron took Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, as his wife; and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
6:24 The sons of Korah: Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites.
6:25 Eleazar Aaron's son took one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife; and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites according to their families.
6:26 These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the Lord said, "Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies."
6:27 These are those who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt. These are that Moses and Aaron.
6:28 It happened on the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,
6:29 that the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "I am the Lord. Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I speak to you."
6:30 Moses said before the Lord, "Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh listen to me?"
New Testament
1 It happened when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.
2 Great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there.
3 The Pharisees came, testing him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"
4 He answered, and said, "Have not you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female,
5 and said, 'For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?'
6 So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, do not let man tear apart."
7 They asked him, "Why then did Moses command us to give her a certificate of divorce, and divorce her?"
8 He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so.
9 I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."
10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the case of the man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry."
11 But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but those to whom it is given.
12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven's sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it."
13 Then little children were brought to him, that he should lay his hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, "Allow the little children, and do not forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these."
15 He placed his hands on them, and departed from there.
16 Behold, one came to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"
17 He said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? No one is good but one. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
18 He said to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You shall not murder.' 'You shall not commit adultery.' 'You shall not steal.' 'You shall not offer false testimony.'
19 'Honor your father and mother.' And, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
20 The young man said to him, "All these things I have observed. What do I still lack?"
21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
22 But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions.
23 Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty.
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
25 When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"
26 Looking at them, Jesus said, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
27 Then Peter answered, "Behold, we have left everything, and followed you. What then will we have?"
28 Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 Everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, will receive one hundred times, and will inherit eternal life.
30 But many will be last who are first; and first who are last.
Psalm
1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt. They have done abominable works. There is none who does good.
2 The Lord looked down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there were any who did understand, who did seek after God.
3 They have all gone aside. They have together become corrupt. There is none who does good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call on the Lord?
5 There they were in great fear, for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6 You would frustrate the plans of the lowly, but the Lord is his refuge.
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, then Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
