Day 358 of 365

Hab 2:1–3:19, Zeph 1:1–18, Rev 16:1–21, Ps 148:1–14

Old Testament

Hab 2:1–3:19

2:1 I will stand at my watch, and set myself on the ramparts, and will look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

2:2 The Lord answered me, "Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it.

2:3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won't prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won't delay.

2:4 Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.

2:5 Yes, moreover, wine is treacherous. A haughty man who doesn't stay at home, who enlarges his desire as Sheol, and he is like death, and can't be satisfied, but gathers to himself all nations, and heaps to himself all peoples.

2:6 Won't all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, 'Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion! How long?'

2:7 Won't your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim?

2:8 Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it.

2:9 Woe to him who gets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

2:10 You have devised shame to your house, by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul.

2:11 For the stone will cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the woodwork will answer it.

2:12 Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!

2:13 Behold, isn't it of the Lord of hosts that the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations weary themselves for vanity?

2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

2:15 "Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies!

2:16 You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed! The cup of the Lord's right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

2:17 For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction of the animals, which made them afraid; because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to every city and to those who dwell in them.

2:18 "What value does the engraved image have, that its maker has engraved it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make mute idols?

2:19 Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Awake!' or to the mute stone, 'Arise!' Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in its midst.

2:20 But the Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!"

3:1 A prayer of Habakkuk, the prophet, set to victorious music.

3:2 Lord, I have heard of your fame. I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Renew your work in the midst of the years. In the midst of the years make it known. In wrath, you remember mercy.

3:3 God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and his praise filled the earth.

3:4 His splendor is like the sunrise. Rays shine from his hand, where his power is hidden.

3:5 Plague went before him, and pestilence followed his feet.

3:6 He stood, and shook the earth. He looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains were crumbled. The age-old hills collapsed. His ways are eternal.

3:7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction. The dwellings of the land of Midian trembled.

3:8 Was the Lord displeased with the rivers? Was your anger against the rivers, or your wrath against the sea, that you rode on your horses, on your chariots of salvation?

3:9 You uncovered your bow. You called for your sworn arrows. Selah. You split the earth with rivers.

3:10 The mountains saw you, and were afraid. The storm of waters passed by. The deep roared and lifted up its hands on high.

3:11 The sun and moon stood still in the sky, at the light of your arrows as they went, at the shining of your glittering spear.

3:12 You marched through the land in wrath. You threshed the nations in anger.

3:13 You went forth for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the land of wickedness. You stripped them head to foot. Selah.

3:14 You pierced the heads of his warriors with their own spears. They came as a whirlwind to scatter me, gloating as if to devour the wretched in secret.

3:15 You trampled the sea with your horses, churning mighty waters.

3:16 I heard, and my body trembled. My lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness enters into my bones, and I tremble in my place, because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the coming up of the people who invade us.

3:17 For though the fig tree doesn't flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls:

3:18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!

3:19 The Lord, the Lord, is my strength. He makes my feet like deer's feet, and enables me to go in high places. For the music director, on my stringed instruments.

Zeph 1:1–18

1 The word of the Lord which came to Zephaniah, the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah.

2 I will utterly sweep away everything off of the surface of the earth, says the Lord.

3 I will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says the Lord.

4 I will stretch out my hand against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place: the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests,

5 those who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the Lord and also swear by Malcam,

6 those who have turned back from following the Lord, and those who haven't sought the Lord nor inquired after him.

7 Be silent at the presence of the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is at hand. For the Lord has prepared a sacrifice. He has consecrated his guests.

8 It will happen in the day of the Lord's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, the king's sons, and all those who are clothed with foreign clothing.

9 In that day, I will punish all those who leap over the threshold, who fill their master's house with violence and deceit.

10 In that day, says the Lord, there will be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

11 Wail, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the people of Canaan are undone! All those who were loaded with silver are cut off.

12 It will happen at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are settled on their dregs, who say in their heart, "The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil."

13 Their wealth will become a spoil, and their houses a desolation. Yes, they will build houses, but won't inhabit them. They will plant vineyards, but won't drink their wine.

14 The great day of the Lord is near. It is near, and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of the Lord. The mighty man cries there bitterly.

15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,

16 a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements.

17 I will bring distress on men, that they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord, and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.

18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

New Testament

Rev 16:1–21

1 I heard a loud voice out of the temple, saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the seven bowls of the wrath of God on the earth!"

2 The first went, and poured out his bowl into the earth, and it became a harmful and evil sore on the people who had the mark of the beast, and who worshiped his image.

3 The second one poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man. Every living thing in the sea died.

4 The third poured out his bowl into the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood.

5 I heard the angel of the waters saying, "You are righteous, who are and who were, you Holy One, because you have judged these things.

6 For they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. They deserve this."

7 I heard the altar saying, "Yes, Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are your judgments."

8 The fourth poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given to him to scorch men with fire.

9 People were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.

10 The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was darkened. They gnawed their tongues because of the pain,

11 and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They did not repent of their works.

12 The sixth poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates. Its water was dried up, that the way might be made ready for the kings that come from the sunrise.

13 I saw coming out of the mouth of the serpent, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, something like frogs;

14 for they are spirits of demons, performing signs; which go forth to the kings of the whole inhabited earth, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty.

15 "Behold, I come like a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his clothes, so that he does not walk naked, and they see his shame."

16 He gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

17 The seventh poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came forth out of the temple, from the throne, saying, "It is done!"

18 There were lightnings, voices, and peals of thunder; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men on the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty.

19 The great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

20 Every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21 Great hailstones, about the weight of a talent, came down out of the sky on people. People blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for this plague is exceedingly severe.

Psalm

Ps 148:1–14

1 Praise Yah! Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise him in the heights!

2 Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his army!

3 Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars!

4 Praise him, you heavens of heavens, You waters that are above the heavens.

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, For he commanded, and they were created.

6 He has also established them forever and ever. He has made a decree which will not pass away.

7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures, and all depths!

8 Lightning and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling his word;

9 mountains and all hills; fruit trees and all cedars;

10 wild animals and all livestock; small creatures and flying birds;

11 kings of the earth and all peoples; princes and all judges of the earth;

12 both young men and maidens; old men and children:

13 let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above the earth and the heavens.

14 He has lifted up the horn of his people, the praise of all his holy ones; even of the children of Israel, a people near to him. Praise Yah!
