Day 55 of 365

Lev 12:1–13:17, Mark 5:1–43, Ps 25:1–22

Old Testament

Lev 12:1–13:17

12:1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

12:2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'If a woman conceives, and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her monthly period she shall be unclean.

12:3 In the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

12:4 She shall continue in the blood of purification thirty-three days. She shall not touch any holy thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed.

12:5 But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her period; and she shall continue in the blood of purification sixty-six days.

12:6 "'When the days of her purification are completed, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the door of the Tent of Meeting, a year old lamb for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering:

12:7 and he shall offer it before the Lord, and make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the fountain of her blood. "'This is the law for her who bears, whether a male or a female.

12:8 If she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves, or two young pigeons; the one for a burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.'"

13:1 The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

13:2 "When a man shall have a rising in his body's skin, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes in the skin of his body the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest, or to one of his sons, the priests:

13:3 and the priest shall examine the plague in the skin of the body: and if the hair in the plague has turned white, and the appearance of the plague is deeper than the body's skin, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall examine him, and pronounce him unclean.

13:4 If the bright spot is white in the skin of his body, and its appearance isn't deeper than the skin, and its hair hasn't turned white, then the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.

13:5 The priest shall examine him on the seventh day, and, behold, if in his eyes the plague is arrested, and the plague hasn't spread in the skin, then the priest shall isolate him for seven more days.

13:6 The priest shall examine him again on the seventh day; and behold, if the plague has faded, and the plague hasn't spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. It is a scab. He shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

13:7 But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again.

13:8 The priest shall examine him; and behold, if the scab has spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is leprosy.

13:9 "When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought to the priest;

13:10 and the priest shall examine him. Behold, if there is a white rising in the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the rising,

13:11 it is a chronic leprosy in the skin of his body, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not isolate him, for he is unclean.

13:12 "If the leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the infected person from his head even to his feet, as far as it appears to the priest;

13:13 then the priest shall examine him; and, behold, if the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean of the plague. It has all turned white: he is clean.

13:14 But whenever raw flesh appears in him, he shall be unclean.

13:15 The priest shall examine the raw flesh, and pronounce him unclean: the raw flesh is unclean. It is leprosy.

13:16 Or if the raw flesh turns again, and is changed to white, then he shall come to the priest;

13:17 and the priest shall examine him; and, behold, if the plague has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him clean of the plague. He is clean.

New Testament

Mark 5:1–43

1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.

2 When he had come out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him out of the tombs.

3 He lived in the tombs. And no one could bind him any more, not even with chains,

4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. No one had the strength to tame him.

5 Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down to him,

7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me."

8 For he said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

9 Then he asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

10 And he begged him much that he would not send them away out of the region.

11 Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding.

12 They begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them."

13 He gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.

14 Those who fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the country. The people came out to see what it was that had happened.

15 They came to Jesus, and saw him who had been possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were afraid.

16 And those who saw it declared to them how it happened to him who was possessed by demons, and about the pigs.

17 Then they began to beg him to depart from their region.

18 As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him.

19 And he did not allow him, but said to him, "Go to your house, to your own, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you."

20 So he went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and everyone marveled.

21 And when Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a great multitude was gathered to him; and he was by the sea.

22 One of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,

23 and begged him much, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live."

24 And he went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides.

25 Now a woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years,

26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,

27 having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes.

28 For she said, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well."

29 And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

30 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

31 And his disciples said to him, "You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'"

32 He looked around to see her who had done this thing.

33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34 And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease."

35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler's house saying, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?"

36 But Jesus, overhearing the message spoken, said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid, only believe."

37 He allowed no one to follow him, except Peter, Jacob, and John the brother of Jacob.

38 And they came to the synagogue ruler's house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.

39 When he had entered in, he said to them, "Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.

40 And they ridiculed him. But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.

41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum!" which means, being interpreted, "Girl, I tell you, get up!"

42 And immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.

43 And he strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

Psalm

Ps 25:1–22

1 ALEPH To you, Lord, do I lift up my soul.

2 My God, I have trusted in you. Do not let me be shamed. Do not let my enemies triumph over me.

3 Yes, no one who waits for you shall be shamed. They shall be shamed who deal treacherously without cause.

4 Show me your ways, Lord. Teach me your paths.

5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

6 Lord, remember your tender mercies and your loving kindness, for they are from old times.

7 Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. Remember me according to your loving kindness, for your goodness' sake, Lord.

8 Good and upright is the Lord, therefore he will instruct sinners in the way.

9 He will guide the humble in justice. He will teach the humble his way.

10 All the paths of the Lord are loving kindness and truth to such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

11 For your name's sake, Lord, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.

12 What man is he who fears the Lord? He shall instruct him in the way that he shall choose.

13 His soul shall dwell at ease. His seed shall inherit the land.

14 The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear him. He will show them his covenant.

15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.

17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses.

18 Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

19 Consider my enemies, for they are many. They hate me with cruel hatred.

20 Oh keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be disappointed, for I take refuge in you.

21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, God, from all of his troubles.
