Day 15 of 40

Gospel of Mark: Mark 6:1–29

1Stop

“Speak, Lord; for your servant hears.”

1 Sam 3:9. Or simply be silent for a few seconds before reading.

2Read

1 And he went out from there and came into his own country, and his disciples followed him.

2 When the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things?" and, "What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands?

3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of Jacob, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Are not his sisters here with us?" They were offended at him.

4 Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house."

5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people, and healed them.

6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. And he went around the villages teaching.

7 And he called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

8 And he commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse,

9 but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.

10 And he said to them, "Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there.

11 Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them."

12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.

13 They cast out many demons, and anointed many with oil who were sick, and healed them.

14 King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him."

15 But others said, "He is Elijah." Others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets."

16 But Herod, when he heard this, said, "This is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen."

17 For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her.

18 For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

19 So Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she could not,

20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed, but he heard him gladly.

21 And then a convenient day came, that Herod on his birthday gave a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.

22 And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you."

23 And he swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom."

24 So she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."

25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."

26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he did not wish to refuse her.

27 So immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John's head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

29 And when his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and placed it in a tomb.

And the psalm of the day: Ps 4

1 Answer me when I call, God of my righteousness. Give me relief from my distress. Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.

2 You sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor? Will you love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah.

3 But know that the Lord has set apart for himself him who is godly: The Lord will hear when I call to him.

4 When agitated, do not sin. Search your own heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.

5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness. Put your trust in the Lord.

6 Many say, "Who will show us any good?" Lord, let the light of your face shine on us.

7 You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and their new wine are increased.

8 In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the Lord alone, make me live in safety.

9 Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.

10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

13 Let us not come into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.]'
